set out to expand its coverage throughout the country
to cater for the ever growing demand of its members.
AFYA SACCO LEADS IN MEMBER
EDUCATION AND TRAINING COUNTRYWIDE ON 2nd JULY
Afya Sacco Society received a trophy for being the best
Savings and Credit Society in Member Education and Training
in the Country during the 83rd Co-operative Day celebrations.
Cooperative Development Minister Njeru Ndwiga led the
Celebrations.
83rd CO-OPERATIVE DAY
ON 2nd JULY
This years’ theme was “micro- finance is
our business co-operating out poverty”.
The event was presided over by the Minister for Co-operative
&Marketing, Peter Ndwiga at Nairobi’s Uhuru
Park. Speaking during the Celebrations known as Ushirika
Day, Mr.Ndwiga said the government is fully committed
to resuscitating the co-operative movement in Kenya.
He said the Government has identified the sector as
a major player in its strategy to improve the economy.
He added that his ministry would thrive in giving the
co-operative societies an enabling environment for their
operations in the country. He directed officials of
co-operative movement to desist from corruption.
Towards the end, the minister said the government had
injected an additional Kshs 500million. Mr.Ndigwa said
there were legal actions planned on Sacco fraud employers,
which has affected members’ ability to access
loans.
The Chairman of Kenya Federation of Co-operative, Stanley
Muchiri urged the Ministry to speed up the Micro-finance
bill, which will regulate the affairs of Saccos.
SEMINARS FOR DELEGATES
The Society has been carrying out seminars for its delegates
in all provinces The first one was for Nairobi followed
by Rift valley and the most current Programme being
for Central and Eastern Provinces on 18th June 2005.Coast
province will be covered in the next two months. The
Delegates are informed of the new products and services
with an emphasis on Savings Mobilization and HIV/AIDS.

Co-operative Insurance of Kenya Japheth Magomere presented
a trophy for the Leading Savings & Credit Society
to Afya Sacco Deputy General Manager Felix Ndoi, during
the Insurance firm’s 27th Annual General Meeting
held at the CIC Plaza Nairobi on May 24th, 2005.
THE ANNUAL DELEGATES CONFERENCE
AT KICC ON SATURDAY 30TH APRIL
The Annual Delegates Conference was held on
Saturday 30th April 2005 at KICC. The Guest of Honor
was Mr. Solomon S. Boit, EBS, Permanent Secretary, Ministry
of Cooperative Development and Marketing. In his Keynote
address, he assured the delegates that the government
would provide a conducive environment to make cooperatives
perform better.

OPENING OF THE KENYATTA NATIONAL HOSPITAL FOSA
Afya Sacco inaugurated FOSA Facility at Kenyatta National
Hospital on April 7th, 2005. Speaking at the launch,
the Chairman, Emmanuel Lubembe said the Society would
introduce Automated Teller Machines (ATM) at the Bank
and in ten of its braches countrywide. This is in bid
to bring services closer to its members who mostly work
at odd hours. Other branches where FOSA has Banks include
Kisumu, Eldoret, Nyeri, Embu, Kakamega, Meru, Nakuru,
Mombasa and the most recent one Kisii. The KNH FOSA
would service the Savings Account, bankers cheques,
salary processing among other useful services found
in bank.
WOCCU/AFYA SACCO PARTICIPATION-HIV/AIDS POLICY
The Society is currently working on coming up with HIV
Policy and is partnering with WOCCU on HIV/AIDS and
its financial impact on the society as a whole. The
Society has started creating awareness on its members
with the emphasis being on Behavioral Change. This has
been achieved through seminars and education to members.
